How to choose keywords for a local business.

The right keywords are the searches your customers make when they’re ready to call someone like you. Here’s how to find them — and how to avoid spending months chasing the wrong ones.

1. Start with your customers’ words

List your services the way customers would say them on the phone, not the way they’re written in your brochure. “Furnace repair”, not “residential heating solutions”. If you’re unsure, think about what people ask for when they call.

2. Add the places you serve

Most local searches include a town (“furnace repair kamloops”) or rely on where the searcher is. Pair each service with the towns you actually serve. A town you don’t serve is a search that can’t become a customer, however busy it is.

3. Don’t chase “near me” literally

People type “near me” a lot, but Google answers it with businesses close to the searcher — it doesn’t need the words on your page. Writing “near me” throughout your site doesn’t help. Being clearly located, with a complete Business Profile and pages for each service, does.

4. Look for the intent to buy

“Emergency plumber” is someone with a problem right now. “How to fix a leaky tap” is someone who may fix it themselves. Both are real searches, but the first is far more likely to become a call. Put your effort into searches that show a need for a business.

5. Weigh demand against competition

Monthly search numbers tell you how many people search; competition tells you how hard it’ll be to rank. A search with steady demand and few strong competitors is often worth more than a big, crowded one. Specific, longer searches (“tankless water heater installation”) usually have less competition and clearer intent.

6. Give each main search a page

A single “Services” page can’t rank well for ten different things. Your most important service-and-town searches each deserve a page that names the service plainly, explains it, and says where you offer it.

7. Measure, then adjust

Pick your shortlist, then check where you rank for each — as the search appears in your own town — and look again in a month or two. The trend tells you what’s working.

Our keyword research builds that shortlist for your site and area, with demand and competition for each, and an SEO Report shows where you rank. Or start with a free report.
